Phase II - Becoming a Spiritual Director
Spiritual Direction Training Program Phase II sought to help participants to build a solid foundation in spiritual direction by introducing the concept and experience of spiritual direction, and reviewing six essential qualities of a spiritual director covered in Phase I. Participants who had completed Phase I were invited to continue in Phase II of the program. In 2002, we had seventeen participants, including six members from SFC. The program was for two-years, comprising five components: (1) readings, (2) reflection / prayer exercises, (3) retreats and half-day gatherings, (4) individual sessions with spiritual directors, and (5) spiritual direction groups. The readings and reflection / prayer exercises were based on Beginning Spiritual Direction by David E. Rosage (Servant Publications, 1994; reprint, Eugene: Wipf and Stock, 1999) together with reviewing books from Spiritual Direction Phase I Training Program for the first year. Trainees did adaptation of Ignatian Spiritual Exercises for the second year. The gatherings, including retreats, helped participants process what they read and experienced. Individual sessions with spiritual directors provided participants the ideal environment to process their lives as directees and some hands-on experience in becoming directors themselves in the future. Minimum of eight individual sessions with spiritual directors per year were required for the program. Spiritual direction groups met four times throughout the year.
